Pikler Triangles and Climbing Sets: How to Choose by Age
Climbing toys like the Pikler triangle have become a nursery staple—and for good reason. They give children a safe, engaging way to build strength, balance, and confidence indoors. But with so many sets available, which one is right for your child's age? Here's how to choose.
What is a Pikler triangle?
Named after pediatrician Dr. Emmi Pikler, the Pikler triangle is a wooden climbing frame that encourages free, self-directed movement. Children climb at their own pace, which builds coordination and body awareness.
Babies and early crawlers (around 6–12 months)
At this stage, keep it simple. A small triangle or a low arch/rocker gives babies something to pull up on and explore under close supervision. You don't need ramps or tall frames yet.
Toddlers (around 1–3 years)
This is the sweet spot for a classic Pikler triangle, often paired with a reversible ramp (a slide on one side, a climbing ladder or rock wall on the other). Foldable designs are handy for smaller spaces. Explore options in our Indoor Play collection.
Preschoolers (around 3–6 years)
Older children love more challenge: larger climbing sets, arches, and multi-piece systems that combine a triangle, arch, ramp, and cushion. These grow with your child and keep play interesting. See our Activity Play pieces.
Safety tips
Always place climbing toys on a soft surface, check that joints and hardware are secure, follow the manufacturer's age and weight guidance, and supervise play. Fold or store the set when it's not in use if space is tight.
The bottom line
Match the set to your child's current stage, and choose a design that can expand as they grow. A well-made climbing set is one of the few toys that stays in rotation for years.
